RIGGING

The Aero is equipped with carbon fiber and fiberglass riggers. The Maas 24, Single Scull, Flyweight and Double have a powder-coated aluminum wing rigger.

If you picked up your shell at the factory or one of our dealers, it came fully assembled and set up for a person of average height and weight. If it was shipped directly to you, it arrived with the the rigger(s) not attached to the shell. Either way, you will want to know how to remove and install the rigger(s.) This is a simple process although we don't recommend doing it on the Aero or Maas 24 on a regular basis.

On the Aero and Maas 24 you will need to lay a small bead of silicone around each bolt hole on the deck and position the rigger over the holes (a second person is useful here.) The idea is to make sure that no water can seep around the threads of the bolts and into the hull of the boat. We generally use a clear silicone caulk -- available in any hardware store.

Aero

On the Aero riggers, the two forward bolts screw into stainless steel threaded inserts; the two aft bolts pass through backup washers and attach to standard nuts. You will have to remove the inspection port and storage bag to install these.

Start with the forward bolts and tighten until both are barely snug, then slide the two aft bolts into position. Now go back and tighten down the forward bolts, then finish with the aft bolts.

The forward bolts can be tightened with the screwdriver alone. You will need to use a wrench to hold the nuts in place on the aft bolts. Replace the bag and inspection port, wipe off any excess silicone. The silicone will be fully cured in a day.

The pins and oarlocks are installed with two crescent wrenches or a 9/16" and a 5/8" wrench. We suggest that you place the pins at the outside of the slot of the rigger, and tighten firmly. A tip is to leave the flat face of the shoulder of the pin parallel to the side of the shell. That way, a quick glance at the pin will tell you if the pin has loosened and requires tightening. Reminder, you should check the tightness of the pins every few months, especially if you use the shell frequently.

Maas 24

The rigger on the Maas 24 bolts into stainless steel threaded inserts. Put a bead of silicone in the hole on the deck, line up the rigger and bolt it on. The bolts should have two washers on them -- the plastic washer closest to the deck and the stainless washer on top of it closest to the head of the bolt.

Flyweight, Single Scull and Maas Double

The rigger bolts through the flange on the deck. Typically, the head of the bolt will be on the top of the rigger with the nut underneath the flange -- although I have seen it done the other way.

There are four washers that go with each bolt. From top to bottom (head of the bolt down through the flange and underneath the flange) [Bolt head] Stainless steel washer, Plastic washer [Flange] 1" x 2" backing plate, Stainless steel washer [Nylock nut]
